There are various kinds of tunings for various purposes, but for now, we will learn the universal standard guitar tuning. Now, the strings of the guitar are tuned to certain notes as the open string notes. When the strings of the guitar are played without being fretted, they are said to be played in the open position, or simply open string. Due to the large mass of vibrating air from the sound-hole, the notes are clearly audible to the human ear. Notes are produced when a string is played, thus setting the string into vibration, which in turn makes the air in the body vibrate. The thinnest string is numbered as the first string, the next adjacent string is the second, then the third and so on till the sixth string. The strings rest on the nut at the start of the fretboard.

The strings run along the fretboard up to the headstock, on which tuning pegs are mounted. This board is called the fretboard, and the metal strips are called frets. The strings start from the bridge, a wooden plate pasted on the body, and rest on the saddle above the bridge. Usually, a guitar has 6 strings which are attached to a wooden body with a rigid neck.
